York’s Anzac Exhibition

Tuesday 24th April, the day before Anzac Day, saw a large group of York people from all walks of life assemble in the space between the Shire Library and the Town Hall.  The occasion was the launch of York’s Anzac Exhibition which Robert Mitchell, EO of Museums Galleries Australia, said was the third largest in the State, coming in after the Army Museum in Fremantle and the magnificent National Anzac Centre in Albany.

History Lab Podcast Launched

The Australian Centre for Public History at UTS and 2SER 107.3 have come together to create History Lab, Australia’s first investigative history podcast, breathing life into public history and bringing it to new audiences.  History Lab is about exploring the gaps between us and the past and invites listeners to participate in the making of history. Examining the legacies the past leaves in the present, it asks listeners to think about the silences, the unknowns and the unknowables in the stories we tell.

History Council of WA AGM & 15th Annual Lecture

We are delighted to have as our guest speaker for our annual lecture Alec Coles, Chief Executive Officer, Western Australian Museum.  Alec will speak on how the New Museum will build on the past strengths of the WA Museum and what new directions it might take, no doubt including reference to the recent State Government announcement about entry fees to the New Museum.   Alec is bound to provide a very erudite and informative presentation, generate a robust discussion and hopefully provide a sneak peek at some images of the New Museum.

Film Review: Darkest Hour

Historians will find much to discuss and dispute in Darkest Hour, a film that covers the short period of Churchill’s life in May 1940 from just before he became prime minister of Britain until the evacuation of British troops from Dunkirk. The film has a number of strengths, one being Gary Oldman’s brilliant, unheroic portrayal of Churchill as a man plagued by doubts in his own ability, who drank his way through a significant amount of alcohol (mostly whisky) every day, and who was desperately dependent upon his wife’s support and encouragement.

2018 Margaret Medcalf Award

Since 2003, 16 researchers and historians, creating works on various Western Australian subjects, have won the Margaret Medcalf Award. Recognizing excellence in referencing and research using State Archives held by the State Records Office of Western Australia (SRO), the award honours Miss Margaret Medcalf OAM, Western Australia’s second State Archivist, for her valuable contribution to the development of archives in Western Australia.
