In July a seminar was held at Fremantle Prison to discuss recent scholarship in Western Australia’s penal history. It was a full day with local, interstate and international speakers presenting 12 papers.
Australian Policy and History
The Australian Policy and History (APH) network seeks to inject historical knowledge into the Australian policy debate. APH is a partnership between the Contemporary Histories Research Group at Deakin University and the Australian National University.
2018 Margaret Medcalf Award winners
Culture and the Arts Minister Hon. David Templeman MLA presented the 2018 Margaret Medcalf Award at a ceremony on Thursday morning 28 June 2018. At this event joint winners were announced for the 2018 Award – Dr Joanna Sassoon and Dr Leigh Straw.
The Australian Association of Consulting Archaeologists Inc. – WA Chapter (AACAI WA) DPLH presentations, 25th July in Fremantle.
Representatives from the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage (DPLH) presented to members and guests of the AACAI WA recently, regarding the current non-statutory application of Aboriginal heritage management within the Department.
National Archives Western Australia office update
The National Archives is committed to a continued presence in Western Australia and is close to finalising arrangements to ensure it has appropriate accommodation in Perth for future years.
Activism, Struggle and Labour History
The 16th Biennial Conference of the Australian Society for the Study of Labour History will be held
in the Perth Trades Hall building (now CFMEU Offices) 80 Beaufort Street, Perth, WA.

Annual Fremantle History Society Studies Day 2018
The Fremantle History Society (FHS) is offering a one-year scholarship valued at $2,000 for a research project relating to the history of Fremantle.
